Älvsborg bridge secured through innovative clamping force measurement

Älvsborg Bridge is not only an iconic part of Gothenburg's skyline but also a vital link for thousands of people every day. To enhance the bridge's safety and accessibility, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) launched a pilot project this year in collaboration with Bulten-owned TensionCam*. The project focused on a critical component of the bridge's stability – the bolt connections in the bridge's suspension cables that support the roadway.
To optimize these connections, several of Trafikverket's traditional nuts were replaced with TensionCam nuts. The goal was to monitor the clamping force of the nuts, which allows for the tracking of the bolt connections' tightening and changes over time. This enables the determination of whether any actions are needed to ensure the correct clamping force, which is crucial for the bridge's long-term safety and durability.
Through the clamping force measurement, several key insights have been gained, and the analysis work continues to further ensure the long-term functionality and stability of the bridge.
